Research, Policy and Evaluation Mixed Methods Approach
Our mixed methods specialist employs both qualitative and quantitative methodologies to most projects. This approach provides both a broad and deep understanding of the subject and has been found to provide the most comprehensive research. IPS takes pride in conducting all research projects with a methodology that is technically sound, rigorous and practical. While always being client centric, our methodologies are designed with best practice considerations, and will provide clients with a robust, evidence- based research or evaluation report.
Department of Education, Skills and Employment - International Engagement in Australian Regional Schools (2019)
IPS was engaged by the Department to investigate the appetite, capacity and options for growing international engagement in rural and regional Australian schools and school systems. Our research methodology included an agile and flexible approach due to the nature of the scope, various locations
across the country and timeframe. One on one interviews, an online survey and focus group sessions
were conducted across the country. The final report highlighted best practice case studies and recommendations for effective engagement across the different contexts identified through the project.
WA Department of Communities - Evaluation of Transitional Housing
This project was extremely challenging due to a very tight time frame of 3 weeks from inception to completion. The Department needed the completed report for presentation to departmental personnel to discuss the lessons learnt which were then used to inform the roll out of the program to the Pilbara.
The evaluation process involved an extensive literature review of all associated documents and face to face interviews with Departmental service providers and Aboriginal clients that were within the program. A total of 18 service providers were interviewed and 8 Aboriginal tenants across the east and west Kimberley (Broome, Derby, Kununurra and Halls Creek). Our Aboriginal consultant (a traditional owner) travelled from Perth to conduct the interviews with service providers and on site with tenants in their homes. One of our directors also conducted interviews with service providers that were based in Perth to ensure all data was collected efficiently.
Given the time frame, all digitally recorded interview data was transcribed as soon as received at the end of the day in preparation of analysis. The software program NVivo assisted with analysis. The draft report was presented to the Department, at the required time, during a face to face meeting. This
enabled a collaborative discussion to finalise the report. At all times Dr Katie communicated with the Department keeping them informed of the project’s progress. The final report was submitted when required and we have since been contracted to conduct further analysis as our insights were rich and our data collection extensive providing the Department with the opportunity to delve more deeply into various aspects of the program.
