Aboriginal businesses are a vital part of the Australian economy, however, a lot more is still needed to be done to ensure that businesses are getting the opportunities they are entitled to under the WA Aboriginal Procurement Policy (APP).
IPS Management Consultants are committed to advocating for Aboriginal businesses across Australia, and we question the unchanged WA APP target of 3% from last financial year.
“Why has there been a decrease in amounts being awarded to Aboriginal businesses, at a time when our economy is growing strongly?” - Katina Law, IPS Executive Director
For a second year, the WA Aboriginal procurement target has been stranded at 3% - whilst the other Federal and many other Aboriginal procurement targets are increasing. IPS Executive Director Katina Law recently had the opportunity to discuss the WA Aboriginal Procurement Target in the recent Business News article, by senior editor Mark Beyer.
Through our own experience, being an Indigenous business, we know that behavioural change is happening too slowly and understand the impact this has on many Aboriginal businesses in WA. Although the policy has had strong success in some sectors, many businesses are not getting access to the opportunities that are available as government and trading enterprises have struggled to meet the APP targets.
Without accountability that these policy targets are being met by government buyers, we cannot be sure if Aboriginal businesses are being considered when seeking quotes. Katina addresses these issues in the article, and called on the WA government to match its federal counterparts by including a mandatory set aside for contracts of a certain value. This will ensure that the departments and government trading enterprises are consistently meeting the policy targets, and that there is genuine engagement with Aboriginal businesses in the process - which is vital to its success.
