In the third of a four-part series focusing on the IPS Leadership Framework, we review Leading Inclusion and Diversity, a module that advocates a culturally safe and inclusive workplace for all employees.
Diversity is reality, inclusion is a choice.
Recent studies show the vast majority of Australian workers want their organisation to create a workplace that is diverse and inclusive, and while many organisations and agencies have implemented policies aimed at increasing diversity among their staff, a policy is only the first step.
‘Diversity is a fact, but inclusion is a choice we make every day.
As leaders, we have to put out the message that we embrace, and not just tolerate, diversity.’ - Nellie Borrero (Managing Director, Senior Strategic Advisor of Global Inclusion and Diversity, Accenture)
There are several groups to consider when we talk about diversity and inclusion in the workplace:
Cultural and linguistic diverse peoples
First Nations peoples
People of all genders
Persons with disabilities
People who are neurodivergent
People of all sexualities
Younger (aged 25 and under) and older (over 50) staff members
‘Diversity doesn’t look like anyone. It looks like everyone.’ – Karen Draper, writer
Look around the room. How diverse is your workplace? And how inclusive?
Can everyone bring their ‘whole’ self to work?
Diversity and Inclusion training with IPS includes unconscious bias and blind spots, developing cultural competence, advocating for equity and inclusion within the workplace and developing, maintaining and leveraging diverse teams.
This module leads succinctly into the final module on the IPS Leadership Framework: Leading Organisations and Culture, which we will talk about in the final segment of this series. Because it’s one thing to attract a more diverse workplace – it’s another to create an environment that retains employees from diverse backgrounds.
